Once again, the Bay Area has opened its gates for an annual and secretive gathering of male political and cultural figureheads. The Bohemian Grove event, which is associated with the Bohemian Club on Nob Hill, is the summertime bacchanal for its exclusive and elite members.

The club was founded by a group of journalists in 1872. Its summer camp has hosted old money (William Randolph Hearst and the Rockefellers were noted members) and former Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. J. Robert Oppenheimer first discussed the Manhattan Project during the July event.

The 2,700-acre Bohemian Grove property is close to the Russian River near the hamlet Monte Rio. Members are treated to sacred rites, plays, pageantry and lectures from interest groups, and the event ends with the burning of an effigy in front of a giant owl.

San Francisco’s secretive Bohemian Grove sued by valets

A lawsuit brought against the Bohemian Club has revealed the inner workings of one of America’s most secretive clubs, headquartered in San Francisco.

Three valets who worked for years at the private club’s infamous summer camp at Monte Rio in Sonoma County brought the complaint, seen by SFGATE. The complaint alleges a litany of unlawful labor practices at Bohemian Grove, including “nonstop” 16-hour work days, during which employees were not provided bathroom and lunch breaks, and a failure to pay minimum wage and overtime.

Every summer for 150 years, a 2,700-acre clearing in the ancient redwoods near the Russian River becomes a gathering place for the world’s elite. The Bohemian Club’s summer camp is shrouded in mystery but is rumored to end with a ritual that involves a human effigy and the burning of a giant sacrificial owl.
